Set in the mid-90s, Steve is a reimagining of Max Porter's Sunday Times bestseller Shy. The film follows a pivotal day in the life of headteacher Steve and his students at a last-chance reform school amidst a world that has forsaken them. As Steve fights to protect the school's integrity and impending closure, we witness him grappling with his own mental health. In parallel to Steve's struggles, we meet Shy, a troubled teen caught between his past and what lies ahead as he tries to reconcile his inner fragility with his impulse for self-destruction and violence.

A sobering drama that throws everything along with the kitchen sink at its doggedly determined hero, Steve's pileup of crises can strain credulity but Cillian Murphy's superb performance keeps it grounded in reality.

A thought-provoking drama with touching themes, Steve may lack its worth in pacing, but its tone & message will make you weep your tears due to its generous empathy for those who have suffered mental health issues.

A broken system that “fix” our youth leading a life of trouble sometimes leads to deeper issues. As it affects the everyone involved, the likes of our main characters, Steve and Shy, we only realize at the end what it is we were truly looking for. An adapted screenplay well done, Cillian Murphy and our stellar cast rung true to the thoughts around mental health and how we can help each other without really knowing each other.

I cried, I laughed - what else could a girl need? Maybe an artistic experience, which this film definitely provided. Cillian Murphy’s majestic craftsmanship was the icing on the cake. Thoughtfully combined details, a compelling story, and faith in humanity restored - all packed into an ordinary, contemporary, everlasting struggle to see the beauty in lost souls. I needed this film. As a teacher, and someone who thought about becoming a social worker when I was very young, I’ve always been drawn to 'lost boys' and what is hiding behind their facade. And there it is, the question: Is it worth it?
