See more Darren D @DarrenJD Jul 2 Despite my complaints about this subgenre of horror, "Stigmata" manages to avoid many of the tired tropes and successfully lands with what it intended to tell. Taking a story of possession and making it very much a religious one rather than a satanic one with battling the forces of evil, it's a battle of faith and control within the church, which brings a refreshing atmosphere. It's very much a product of its time, with that flashy stylised editing that worked in its favour, as the moments of terror resulting from the injuries of stigmata are well shot and graphic in a real sense of harm. Patricia Arquette and Gabriel Byrne are terrific together onscreen and they both bring an individual strength to their roles. It’s a shame that Nia Long's character goes missing, as she's a great friend and support for Frankie (Patricia Arquette) throughout the story. The soundtrack is poor, and the cinematography leaves much to be desired. The biggest problem, however, is the plot, as it lacks any serious theological research and instead introduces conspiracy theories that ultimately undermine the film’s credibility and seriousness. Le da una vuelta interesante al tema de la Iglesia y de la fe. Además, me encanta la simbología que hay durante toda la película (el agua y las flores, por ejemplo).
