After all, we already know how it ends: 155 lives saved, a hero celebrated, and a happy landing. Yet, thanks to Tom Hanks’ understated brilliance and Clint Eastwood’s no-nonsense direction, the film is surprisingly engrossing. Hanks single-handedly carries the movie, delivering a performance that’s authentic, humble, and deeply human. He avoids the trap of playing Sully as a larger-than-life hero, instead portraying him as a man grappling with doubt, responsibility, and the weight of public expectation. Eastwood’s direction is lean and focused, avoiding the self-indulgence that could’ve derailed the film. There are no vanity shots, no unnecessary subplots - just a straightforward, respectful retelling of a modern miracle. The crash sequences are tense, and the investigation scenes are gripping, even though we know the outcome. The film’s real strength lies in its exploration of the aftermath: the NTSB hearings, the media scrutiny, and Sully’s internal struggle to reconcile his actions with the doubts of others. Is it groundbreaking cinema? No. But it’s a solid, well-crafted drama that honors its subject without resorting to melodrama. 7.5/10: well done to Hanks for carrying the film, and to Eastwood for keeping it on track.
