Highly entertaining romp that sees Mr Chan give the IRA a bit of a hiding in a series of well-staged chases, bombingsnanf shootings. Pearce Brosnan turns in a fascinating performance as a composite of Martin McGuinness (as a political leader) and Gerry Adams (the voice and beard). The movie is engaging from the start, and he delivers on the acquired elegance and emotional intensity of the political ascension his character enjoys. The film requires a paradigm shift in order to fully appreciate it. Chan delivers the action-thriller portion, but Brosnan carries the intellectually broader plot from the very beginning. Well worthy of a second watch! See more Trou d @RT86672061 Feb 19 I was tempted to give it four stars. It lost that half star for the annoyingly lame title. But the original title was even lamer, "The Chinaman", otherwise it would have lost a whole star. This movie was a pleasant surprise. I found it by accident while rooting through the virtual dumpster that is the Verizon lineup. The "Critics Consensus" up there has it wrong. It does not stick to the formula, and that's its saving grace. The "guy you shouldn't have messed with" (Chan) is onscreen far less than half the time. We don't have to sit through any Wile E. Coyote-style engineering on his part. He doesn't "kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out"; he does the sorting. The real story is not the revenge but the intrigue. The writers walked a fine line between Chinese inscrutable vernacular and British inclusivist nannying, and the end result is something original, something watchable, something that draws you in and keeps you guessing.
