Desperate to make some money so she can move into a new apartment, college student Samantha Hughes takes a mysterious babysitting job. When she arrives at the house, Mr. Ulman mentions a full lunar eclipse and explains there is no child, but that Samantha will be watching his mother instead. After exploring the sinister-seeming house, Samantha soon comes to realize that her employers are hiding a horrifying secret and have plans to use her, dead or alive.

It has everything a horror fan would want: pretty girls, lots of blood, a good setup for scares, a creepy attic, a weird old lady, satanic rituals, a friend who doubts the validity of the situation, and a final girl.

A college student accepts a sketchy offer to babysit. This film opens with horror queen Dee Wallace as a realtor. Then her character is never seen again. I think she was aware of how mundane this film is, took her money, and ran. This throwback to 80s cinema has a generic premise which is bogged down further by an overly long setup. Even once we get to the house a sequence showing the student going around the house and ripping off Risky Business had me thinking about what my next watch would be. Dissapointing. My wife agrees.

The House of the Devil is definitely slow-paced, and it doesn’t showcase the sharper, more confident storytelling Ti West later showed in X or Pearl. But the old-school tension, atmosphere, and creeping sense of dread still make it worth the sit. Even though most of the real action doesn’t hit until the last 20 minutes, the final plot twist lands hard enough to justify the buildup. It’s a retro-style slow burn that rewards your patience in the end. Worth a watch, if just the once.

Painfully slow buildup the first 2/3 of the movie. Honestly, would’ve been better if they had made a mini film out of the last 20 minutes.

Bad acting, worse script, major plot holes, and a terrible ending. At the end, you won’t know why you watched it or why someone green-lighted it. Worse yet, not much of what happens is explained. If I had written the script, I would have done a couple of rewrites and fixed the problems.
