Victorian London is gripped with fear as a serial killer is on the loose and leaving cryptic messages written in the blood of his victims. It translates novelist Peter Ackroyd's densely historical and cerebral foray into the horror genre into an entertainment, without being weighed down by Ackroyd's numerous fascinating but imaginative layers and tangents.

The film’s overstuffed plot does not quite leave enough space for other film elements to “breathe”, but...viewing will be rewarded...given the film’s deliciously macabre atmosphere...and the unexpected twist-finale.

A series of murders and the public suspects the culprit to be the legendary Golem of Jewish lore. An inspector (Bill Nighy) is set up to fail in the investigation. There is little room for a break from the plot in this film that explores themes of identity, performance, and violence as cultural spectacle. I found it to be a well constructed film, bouncing between the past and present and presenting suspects as the killer while they give their verbal accounts. The mystery is really secondary. Nighy gives a beautifully quiet performance as a gay man that accepts the reality of his time and Olivia Cooke as the wife of one of the victims is both enigmatic and bold.

The storyline isn’t always clear or catchy and feels a bit rushed at times. I didn’t really like the cinematography — it’s often too bright. The characters are fine, but the acting is inconsistent. However, the horror elements are well executed, and I really like the overall atmosphere.

Period pieces always get my attention, and Horror theme in an period piece really gets me going. The matter in which our main characters go about their duties is exemplary, to say the least. Amidst the Gore and debauchery, there is genuine tenderness. Unceasing intrigue keepsme on the edge of my seat, breathing silently, so as not to miss anything. The gore returns to remind us that this is a physical assault on the senses as well as a psychological war on our minds, as is not just what we see but also what we think and presume to be. Mind officially blown and happy beyond belief with film. A Keeper...
