A war film with action and tension that doesn’t skimp on character or believability, The Outpost had me worried at first, since it bombards you with so many characters it seems impossible that it would be able to keep you up to speed with all of them. But much like starting High School, the names are all there, you just need to get used to them. It really captures the feel of a claustrophobic outpost, with the same people, rooms and routines with the monotony broken every now and then with a fight for your life. You do get to know and care for the characters as the film goes on, and the battle scenes are hard hitting and fittingly brutal. It takes it’s fair shares of shots, pun intended, at the incompetence of military leadership and their poor decisions that land soldiers in situations like this, some so blatant that even a layman could point them out. It’s a solidly entertaining film about camaraderie and the relentless deluge of misery that is modern warfare.
