Chris S @Janomi Jul 19 The Outpost is a really solid war film because the combat feels immediate, chaotic, and terrifying. The firefight is not staged like clean action-movie heroism; it feels loud, confusing, desperate, and overwhelming, which helps show how exposed the soldiers were at Combat Outpost Keating. Rod Lurie gives the film a strong sense of geography and pressure. The outpost’s terrible location at the bottom of surrounding mountains becomes one of the movie’s biggest sources of tension, making the danger feel obvious long before the main attack begins. The ensemble approach also works well. Scott Eastwood, Orlando Bloom, Jack Kesy, Cory Hardrict, and the rest of the cast help make the outpost feel lived-in, while Caleb Landry Jones stands out by bringing fear, exhaustion, and humanity to his role. The early sections can feel fragmented, but once the film locks in, it becomes intense, grounded, and respectful. I expected another action war movie, not so, this movie is so real See more Wayne K @RT88290232 Mar 25 A war film with action and tension that doesn’t skimp on character or believability, The Outpost had me worried at first, since it bombards you with so many characters it seems impossible that it would be able to keep you up to speed with all of them. But much like starting High School, the names are all there, you just need to get used to them. It really captures the feel of a claustrophobic outpost, with the same people, rooms and routines with the monotony broken every now and then with a fight for your life. You do get to know and care for the characters as the film goes on, and the battle scenes are hard hitting and fittingly brutal. It takes it’s fair shares of shots, pun intended, at the incompetence of military leadership and their poor decisions that land soldiers in situations like this, some so blatant that even a layman could point them out. It’s a solidly entertaining film about camaraderie and the relentless deluge of misery that is modern warfare. See more Read all reviews
