Craig B @Boundsy Feb 8 The Retreat (the 2020 film, not to be confused with the 2021 LBTGQ film of the same name) is certainly an intriguing psychological horror. Sure, it's not perfect, but it's not too long and has its moments of tension, and overall the acting is reasonable. However, the real star of the show? The incredible cinematography. It makes me feel as though am going crazy along with the character. If you have the patience and open mindedness I would recommend this movie. My only complaints about it are the over used jump scare sound and that the crawling monsters were a little cringey. See more Jeffrey P @vanillavoodoo1 08/25/2024 First 20 minutes were terrible and could have been omitted entirely, weird vibes from these guys in the first 15 minutes. The remainder of the film is a lot of foreboding music and hinting at something, and some weird flashbacks that also could have been left out, but it never quite lives up to what it alluding to and doesn’t go anywhere good as it jumps around from bad to worse back to bad to worser and back again. One could say the ending was nothing but a popcorn fart but that would be too high of praise. The monster was the highlight, I guess. Should have called it Two Guys in a Closet and a Monster. I had no clue what the plot was at any point in the movie and had more questions than answers by the end of it, and not in a good sense. The jump scare music was awful quality which was one of the first things I noticed. Every dramatic scene used this same sound each time which is wild. This movie had some of the WORST actors and the director Bruce Wemple must’ve been high on drugs writing the script. Not sure what enabling friend of his told him the movie idea was good enough to produce but I seriously recommend you don’t waste time watching it. One man while talking to his psychiatrist tries to recall the events of what happened to him A couple backpackers go to a retreat in the Adirondack mountains They hear about the Native American legend of the Wendigo monster and go about the wilderness Unbeknownst to them though something monstrous is lurking in the shadows But is it real or just their minds playing tricks on them? Much of this movie's lonely setting works because it's cut off from civilization An unsettling score helps elevate the mood But damn the movie's excessive murky lighting particularly the night scenes, a lot of it is really hard to make out Kind of a shame too this only focuses on one man alone and his sanity and solitude being pushed to the limits Having the other backpackers maybe would've been wiser But from a psychological perspective the Wendigo can be taken as a mental creation; it's not the monster that takes form it's the spirit There's a lot of confusing editing here that'll be off putting but as far as losing grip on reality it'll resonate with those whom have been on acid trips It tries to be about tension between best friends, monsters in the snow, and alternate versions of what might have happened It comes off as more of a letdown to what could've been but it's short to say the least See more Read all reviews
