What to Know

Critics Consensus

Leveraging Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's classic chemistry to texturize a friendship tested by greed, The Rip tears into its potboiler setup with compulsively watchable confidence.

The Rip seems highly possible until its overblown climatic end, but even when it succumbs to the action thriller norms, it and the cast always keeps you thoroughly entertained. Go to Full Review

Joe Carnahan's crime thriller feels like a nice throwback to '90s genre pictures, but it pulls a few too many punches. Go to Full Review

I was entertained, even if for the longest stretches I couldn’t have told you who was doing what to whom. Chalk it up as yet another twist in the tale of Matt ‘n’ Ben – two Yin/Yang talents who will be yoked together for eternity. Go to Full Review

This movie has a lot of problems...particularly with how slow it is. You get some decent performances from Damon and Affleck but most of the scenes felt empty. Go to Full Review

With a cast of this caliber, this should have been a stronger film. It felt dumbed down and like they held their punches. Go to Full Review

Maybe if Carnahan took advantage of the Damon-Affleck chemistry, injecting some comic relief, the film would be more entertaining. He doesn't. Go to Full Review

Luke K @LukeAus 3h Incredible performances by the cast. The best new movie I have seen in years. Just when you thought you had it figured out, BAM! Another spanner thrown in the works! Will have you guessing until the very end. See more Bob J. @RT46907538 1d I really liked the mystery aspect of the movie, though I did have it figured out pretty early on. It still didn't take away from the experience. I would definitely recommend it, especially if you are a Damon/Affleck fan See more Brighton N @RT09904023 2d The Rip is well-made, it's well-directed, but it's simply generic straight-to-streaming action fare. Its mystery elements are generic, the characters and premise are derivative, and the plot's payoff can't justify a watch or a recommendation. The only true selling point of The Rip is, at the very least, it isn't as bad as X-Y-or-Z-other-terrible Netflix films. Check out my more in-depth review at The Reel Ranker by searching "The Rip" ;) See more Jennifer S @Jenspective 2d Not gonna lie, this crime movie feels like two friends trying to outrun their own guilt. Great character development by the way. Damon always has this look "one last time". You know that look, when you've made a bad choice and you know, and you're still bargaining with yourself. Affleck on the other hand, believes they're already in deep. I also found that I loved the first parts of the movie more than the ending parts. See more Christopher F @RT12254026 3d I loved the first part half of this movie. Ben and Matt are always a hit with me when it comes to action/thriller movies. I have to say that the ending was a little disappointing to me. I expected a little more. See more Hugh K. @HughK 6d They did a good job of making you care and understand the characters See more Read all reviews
