In a near-future Florida where gun control has been abolished, the state's ambitious governor (Oscar Nuñez, The Office) introduces a chilling solution to school shootings: a state-wide, televised fight-to-the-death competition known as "The School Duel." Sammy, a troubled 13-year-old, secretly enlists against his mother's wishes -- seduced by promises of purpose, patriotism, and notoriety. But as the deadly spectacle unfolds, that dream begins to crumble. Equally, the despairing denouement becomes only more and more inevitable, but that’s really the film’s point: how hideously successful and accepted this inhuman system has become. In that regard, Wiseman hits center mass.

The best dystopias make the audience wince, an off-kilter nightmare vision of where things are going. In that sense, The School Duel is a modest success: it accomplishes what it sets out to do. But it chooses the easiest targets, not the most meaningful.

Horrific in an understated way, "The School Duel" unfolds in a future so grim that the world as we see it is black-and-white — and not the glistening B&W of noir classics, either. It’s a wash of grey that suggests this is no good future for anyone.

The School Duel is not a bad film, but it struggles with pacing in several places. There are moments where the story feels unnecessarily drawn out, slowing the momentum when it should be building tension and emotional investment. Despite that, the casting is one of the movie’s strongest qualities. The performances are solid across the board, especially from the actress playing the mother, while Kue delivers a strong performance that helps carry many of the film’s better moments. Unfortunately, the biggest weakness comes from the soundtrack. Some of the rap sequences feel less like storytelling and more like a shameless attempt to promote music, which pulls attention away from the narrative. The use of children’s songs throughout the film is also distracting and often clashes with the emotional tone of important scenes. Overall, The School Duel has enough good performances and story elements to stay watchable, but poor music choices prevent it from reaching its full potential.
