Critics Consensus

The Strangers: Prey at Night may appeal to fans of the original who've been jonesing for a sequel, but its thin story and ironic embrace of genre tropes add up to a bloody step back.

Grimly efficient sequel to the 2008 shocker The Strangers. Go to Full Review

With its infuriatingly dim-witted characters and generic slasher movie feel, The Strangers: Prey At Night is a surprisingly tame and forgettable rehash. Go to Full Review

No tension, no drama, no interest, no scares, no emotional involvement and no motive. No chance. Go to Full Review

The movie is a wash of reprocessed horror gimmicks which we’ve all seen over and over. Go to Full Review

Prey at Night makes the audience feel everything it wants us to, and what's more, it outdoes the original in every way, making for an unexpected, satisfying slasher - a rarity to be sure. Go to Full Review

See more Nathan J. @NathanDirector Apr 17 Rating: 5/10 ⭐️ I expected a slow-burn chiller, but this ended up being a super neon-soaked, 80s-style slasher. What Worked: Samul’s neon lighting gives the dark trailer park a chaotic texture I totally dug. The pool sequence is fantastic, blending a brutal struggle with upbeat 80s pop for a jarring contrast. Through my Methodist faith lens, seeing this fractured family selflessly sacrifice for each other beautifully reminded me how crisis forces us to rely on unconditional love and grace. The Cuts: The middle part really dragged for me because the family makes terrible, cliché decisions. Leaning hard into campy tropes gave me total tonal whiplash, totally abandoning the original’s realistic dread. Keeping it spoiler-free, the early dialogue feels super forced while we just spin our wheels waiting for the horror to kick in. Verdict: An 80s slasher homage that loses the original’s creepy magic. Okay for mindless chases, but skip if you loved the first film's grounded tension. See more Theodore F. @Sirhotness Mar 11 Definitely a disappointment from the 2008 original but surprisingly had some entertaining moments. The characters that make a lot of stupid decisions that’s always annoying. See more Read all reviews
