I really thought they could make this work. They removed so much of the emotion that made the book work. The father-son dynamic just didn’t hit the same, and the relationship between them never felt as powerful as it did in the book. The whole thing with the mom and seeing the ghosts was also changed so much — and completely altered how the story unfolded. Even the way the body was found was changed, along with so many other important details. And honestly, it wasn't just the changes themselves that bothered me. The biggest problem was that all the emotion was gone. Nothing hit. And even if I hadn't read the book, I still would have given this movie a low score. It wasn't simply a case of "the book was better." The movie just didn't work for me on its own. The suspense didn't land, the emotional moments didn't land, and the characters didn't have the impact they should have. Therefore, it is insane to me that people are bashing what is a pretty serviceable thriller. Yes, the plot is not exactly rewriting the genre or anything, but it is executed really well. I wish it were more engaging, as it lacked some excitement and thriller elements and felt more like a wait-and-see. It is worth a watch, though, and people more in tune with detective skills might find it more interesting.
