I have a soft spot for Hammer horror films, religious horror, and occult horror, so this movie should have been a slam dunk. I was never bored watching the movie. I was just underwhelmed. I have heard several people in my life call it a shocking movie, and even by 70's standards, it is pretty tame. Honestly the most shocking thing about it is naked Natassja Kinski, who was only 14 or 15 when she made this picture. There are just too many characters, and I never really felt the stakes. I think if the film felt more contained, and if it had given Kinski more to do, it would have been a lot more effective. That said, I really enjoyed Richard Widmark in this. He plays a popular writer who studies occult phenomenon, and he is trying to figure out what makes Kinski's character special. I have a feeling that the novel that this film is based on goes more in depth with the characters and their motivations, so that certain events have far more impact. This movie was just moving too fast and a bit all over the place. We did not spend enough time with anyone, save Widmark's character, to care about anyone. CHRISTOPHER LEE!! and I didn't recognize, but NASTASSIA KINSKI ( as the young nun), nor older HONOR BLACKMAN!; also Denholm Elliot. Interesting plot. I liked it. Giving it 3 1/2 RT stars. But not liked by todays standards, & most RT ratings low. It was disconcerting to see WIDMARK in this, but I think he wanted to be with CHRIS LEE, etc., and I guess they were trying to replicate the genre of ROSEMARY'S BABY. And Mz HONOR BLACKMAN... she was born in 1925!, which would have made her 41 in 1964 when she was the classic BOND GIRL in GOLDFINGER. She's 98 and still alive today. I never even heard of it before, til on TV & Saw DEVIL DAUGHTER 2/1/2023. See more Matthew D @RT74523642 08/18/2021 Stands as being the last theatrical Hammer movie for several decades.
