From there, they get into a fast-paced relationship to make money. The story is great, with strong, short side dialogues, and without exaggeration, the film keeps tension and suspense in every key scene. Matthew McConaughey and Al Pacino deliver tremendous performances, especially Al Pacino. Their chemistry is on point, making it feel real, not just acting. I appreciate D. J. Caruso for showing the measurable life of a gambler. However, the movie lacks good camera work and writing, and the ending was a bit confusing. This movie tries to play the odds but doesn’t always hit the jackpot. On paper, it’s got all the ingredients: Al Pacino bringing his trademark fire, Matthew McConaughey as a fallen football star with a golden gift for predicting games, and the high-stakes world of sports betting. The setup is slick, and the first half keeps you hooked with tension, energy, and Pacino doing what Pacino does best.. making even a bad hand look like a royal flush. But here’s the kicker: once halftime’s over, the movie fumbles hard. The second half drags like a game that should’ve ended in the 4th quarter, stretching a 90-minute story into a bloated two-hour grind. The script feels generic and painfully predictable.. you can see every play coming a mile away. The director doesn’t do the story any favors either (not shocking if you know his track record). Now, McConaughey? Let’s just say he can’t really keep pace with Pacino’s larger-than-life presence. The chemistry between the two is shaky at best, making the mentor-protégé vibe fall a little flat. Rene Russo adds some support as Pacino’s wife, but she doesn’t get enough shine to leave a lasting impression. Plus, the characters across the board are either unlikable or straight-up bland, which makes it tough to root for anyone. Still, Pacino is the saving grace. He elevates the weak script with pure charisma, keeping you entertained even when the story stalls. If you’re into sports betting, you might find it mildly intriguing. If you’re an Al Pacino fan, this movie is basically him carrying the whole squad on his back. Otherwise? His character is a lowlife hustler supposedly running a business that "legally" shakes down gamblers through phone call harassment. Pacino chooses to use his chew-up-the-scenery character but here he's just a loud obnoxious sleaseball. We're supposed to believe Rene Russo is hot when she's really kind of nasty actually, sorry, and McConaughey is the young son he never had. Who cares? It's not believable that he runs a shakedown business for $25 a throw on (the old) 900 lines with a stable of aggressive threatening "tipsters" who can't possibly be sharing winning bets. He's rich and throws money around. There's no way his business model could exist for more than 6 months at a time. The way he operates he would have to be constantly on the move.
