I now find Cruise tolerable only when he's in a movie that undercuts or ridicules his narcissism--as Eyes Wide Shut did and as this movie does even more noticeably.

Vanilla Sky is nearly identical to the 1997 Spanish film it's based on, except it's set in Manhattan instead of Madrid and has a much better soundtrack.

If the star and director are (kind of) worrying about the same middle-age falloff, Crowe’s specific fears are more compelling to me and responsible for what, intellectually, is the movie’s most fascinating idea.

The plot is difficult at times to capture (and really only comes together at the end) but that is the beauty of this film, as Cruise’s character struggles along with the viewer to understand what is actually happening to him. His moment of clarity at the end is ours as well, where the soundtrack and visuals are especially powerful additions to Cruise’s performance. At the center of it all: a lesson that truly sinks in as we realize the torturing consequences that our selfish actions can have on ourselves and the people to whom we connect.

3.25 ⭐️ Good plot with some genuinely mind bending psychological games. A bit slow at times, and not exactly what I expected, but it still pulled me into its dreamy confusion. Feels like one of those films that could hit much harder on a rewatch someday.

The movie is great beginning to end. You never actually really know what’s going on until the very end, and if you like movies like that then this one is for you. Tom’s acting was great i could barely even make myself understand that it was him as the character. Great movie and i definitely recommend it.
