It just painstakingly retells the the story of the reporters and police, with no hint of a climax. The shots are good, the actors are good, but you just sit there watching nothing happen. This film is more of a time capsule than a mystery. It follows a straightforward narrative, attempting to portray the investigations accurately. Fincher does a great job immersing us into the time with smoke filled rooms, frantic news rooms, and the tactile presence of documents one must sift thru to find nuggets of information. about the physics of the search and the material cost of seeking a truth that remains out of reach. Oddly, however, the realism of the film also makes it emotionally distant and the audience is captured more by the fact these are true events being portrayed. It successfully captured the emotions of frustration, anxiousness, and curiosity that the characters had with every lead and interaction with the Zodiac. Although the ending is not the ideal ending that viewers want, it conveys and questions the reality, tragedy, and consequences that come with murder, obsession with curiosity, and the media. Overall, I found it an interesting film with a good plot and complex characters. It was a bit long to sit through, though, but if you want a film that makes you feel a range of emotions/tension and an interesting psychological thriller built through slow-burning suspense with not really any jump scares, I would recommend The Zodiac.
