Critics Consensus

Hope Floats sinks under a deluge of melodramatic turns and syrupy sentimentality, although Sandra Bullock remains a winning star.

A winsome piece that turns a loving eye on Sandra Bullock as a down-in-the-dumps ex-beauty queen. Go to Full Review

This material could obviously lead in a lot of different directions. It seems most promising as comedy or satire, but no: Hope Floats is a turgid melodrama with the emotional range of a sympathy card. Go to Full Review

TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch 2d Hope Floats is an underrated romantic drama that continues to resonate because of its sincerity and emotional honesty. Sandra Bullock delivers a warm, vulnerable, and deeply authentic performance, reminding audiences why she remains such a powerful presence on screen. She captures heartbreak, resilience, and quiet strength in a way that feels natural and relatable. Harry Connick Jr. provides the perfect balance, bringing charm and stability that make their on-screen chemistry believable and heartfelt. The supporting cast adds depth, helping create a strong sense of community and emotional grounding. While the screenplay has a few predictable moments, it never loses its emotional focus. The direction and editing allow the story to flow smoothly, keeping viewers engaged without feeling forced. This is not a flashy or overly dramatic film, but it stands the test of time through its gentle storytelling. Hope Floats is a comforting, emotionally rewarding movie that proves simple stories See more Mickey B. @Mickerdoo Jan 18 Why have enemies when you can come home to a town with no sympathy, understanding or manners? Payoff is way too late and little. See more Gen M Jul 15 Despite the critics ratings I decided to give it a go because I really like Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jnr. While it was rather sad but relateable at times, it had an overall uplifting tone. Maybe get the kleenex out while watching. See more thiago s @Thiagostone Jul 11 Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom See more Fiona S May 17 Extremely underrated Romance movie. It remains totally true to the Romantic genre and never pretends to be anything else. But like the old movies before scripts became less important than the stars and "ratings", it uses a strong core of drama to pull it together. A hefty dose of realism and the pain of divorce which is still relevant, hits the heart. Forrest Whittaker's direction combines the importance of "place" with poignant close-ups. It helps to be taken away to old-school towns with lush forests and shimmering heat! It's not "smaltzy" as many critics smugly ripped it. It's a movie that shows where there is romance, there is always hope. See more Dave C 01/07/2025 A long, protracted story that never really peaks. The schmaltzy, angsty emotional states don't help either, as nothing really resolves, and most of the characters aren't developed enough to show us anything remotely close to depth. As such, all efforts fall short, and it ends up being a disappointing, forgettable film See more Read all reviews
