See more Tom M 08/29/2023 An uplifting story beautifully told. Sister Maria Rosa Leggo, a catholic nun in Honduras who won't take no for an answer. She built a network of orphanages, raising tens of thousands of children and spurring national movements to better lives and communities. The filmmakers spent months with the sister and not only captured her and her staff hard at work but, through the trust they earned, we get glimpses of Sister's fun and mischievous nature. She is both an energetic and calming presence wherever she goes. A heartwarming story of tenacity and inspiration in the face of adversity, "With This Light" will convince event the most pessimistic that there is hope for humanity. This film tells the story of Sister Maria, whose vibrant personality is only offset by the staggering number of lives she saved—over 87,000— a direct result of the work she put in to build free schools and health clinics for Honduran orphans, offering an eye-opening look into their lives. This film follows a few young women who are directly effected by the schools and clinics built by Sister Maria, and gives an intimate portrait of life in Honduras. I commend the filmmakers for being brave enough to tell these type of stories in neighborhoods where crime and violence is a part of life. But Sister Maria didn't stop with one person, through tenacity, strength, compassion, grit, a vision and with the help of her Lord Jesus Christ, Sister Maria helped over 87,000 Honduran children escape poverty, violence, and homelessness throughout her 70 years as a Franciscan Nun. With this Light is a beautiful documentary by co-directors Nicole Bernardi-Reis & Laura Bermúdez and Executive Produced by Jessica Sarowitz. I had no idea what to expect when I was invited to the LA premiere but when the film was over, I was left awe inspired by Sister Maria and the grace, persistence and love she had for the children of Honduras. The filmmakers and their all-female creative team, lovingly tell the story of Sister Maria, an orphan herself, who at the age of 6 ran away from home to join the Franciscan Nuns on their mission to help the people of Honduras. Over the course of the film, we learn about Sister's many endeavors over her 70 years as a Nun, while also focusing on two girls (Maria and Rosa) who are attending Sister's school for girls and growing up in present day Honduras. When the film was over, I was moved to tears. With This Light is a love letter to Sister Maria and a call to action to all who see it - that we too, in our way, can be a force for good and change in the world.
