See more DanTheMan 2 @DanTheMan2150AD 12/01/2024 Tom Selleck and his magnificent moustache in a post-Magnum branch-out phase decide to take on the US prison system in An Innocent Man, one that while B-grade in nature is given the A-grade treatment by its cast and crew. Despite the clichés coming thick and fast and the plot following a rather predictable set of beats, the film's strength lies in its performances, Peter Yates' great direction and the film's depiction of prison life, particularly the tendency for some more experienced inmates to take pity on the "new guy" and give him some pointers so he stands at least some chance of surviving beyond his first week. The film isn't so much a dialogue-driven character study. Instead, it delivers a laidback psychological examination of what incarceration does to the human soul and the toll it can take on a person's life. Selleck himself does a great job differentiating himself from his usual typecast persona, while F. Murray Abraham adds a touch of class to what is otherwise a stereotypical mentor role. David Rasche and Richard Young are the result of what would have happened had Crockett and Tubbs gone off the deep end, roles the two play very well while Laila Robins puts in a sterling effort as the suffering wife. Howard Shore's music is admittedly a bit flat but the song that caps off the film is a true bop; ultimately, for a film that is primarily designed as disposable entertainment, An Innocent Man is a certified piece of dad cinema that manages to generate a very credible nightmarish hell, where there is no good options and little in the way of hope. Ain't life a motherfucker. See more Harry N 11/18/2024 The plot is unrealistic. Police making a mistake and framing an innocent man who then plots his revenge. Hard to swallow. However the prison part of the story is very well done. It reveals how our middle class values and common decency have no bearing in a prison environment. Such environment is based on racial power. Selleck must understand he has to compromise his "outside the walls" values to survive, literary, in prison. Such may be an eye opener for those not familiar with the prison, criminal, environment.
