James Mason didn't even attempt a Belfast accent and the rest of the cast had southern/Dublin accents. Great mood and cinematography. Some great shots of 1940s post war Belfast. The b&w film creates a eerie feel to the film and the air raid shelter scene when he's slipping in and out of reality is one of cinemas best moments. The first time you watch it you think your watching someone's dream that's been captured and put on the big screen. James Mason plays it superbly; he is a terrorist murderer with whom we grow to sympathise, but this is not fairy tale mush; he maintains an edge, even in his severely weakened state, and he is no cuddly reformed villain. The behaviour of all around him - strange characters, with their own way of looking at the world - makes this film real and emotional. It seemed that every character was trying to balance their own welfare against the cause they believed in, and each character had redeeming qualities. The film had good suspense in every scene.
