What to Know

Critics Consensus

Spearheaded by an excellent Kirk Douglas, Ace in the Hole is an incisive and sardonic satire that, much like its opportunistic hero, never lets moral compunction get in the way of a good story.

Ace in the Hole is a grotesque document. However, it is realistic and never cheaply handled. We must say Wilder has a masterly touch while offending his customers. And he will offend many with this spectacle of personal degradation and morbidity. Go to Full Review
Mae Tinee Chicago Tribune 6h
As a picture of Tatum, it flops badly. Not that there are no egomaniacs in the newspaper business, but this one is neither sufficiently clever nor consistent enough for the weight of the story. Go to Full Review
Mack Williams Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com 6h
Newspapermen could cite a dozen reasons to prove that no reporter could get away with Tatum's trick. But the film is smash entertainment, with an unflattering, documentary quality. Go to Full Review
Virginia Graham The Spectator 6h
It is horrible -- I don’t recall feeling so shaken for years -- but both in its crowd-scenes and in its moments in the tomb is handled with such brilliance that one can only, though feeling slightly sick at being a member of the human race, applaud. Go to Full Review
John McDowell Newark Star-Ledger 6h
There may be no sympathy for Douglas and Miss Sterling -- nor, to the picture's credit, is any sought. But one thing is inescapable: Ace in the Hole is a picture you won't forget in a long time. Go to Full Review
Ezra Goodman Illustrated Daily News (Los Angeles) 6h
A powerfully disturbing picture. Go to Full Review

Petros T @PetrosTserpelis Nov 30 Equal measures sarcastic and tragic, "Ace in the Hole" is masterfully written. It's really fascinating to watch the decision-making and morals of the characters unfold, their motives, goals, nuances and how all this subtext is represented in the script, direction and acting. The claustrophobia of the cave is juxtaposed in a gut-wrenchingly poignant, pertinent manner with the media circus springing around it and benefiting from it, and you can't help but watch transfixed, wide-eyed and in shock. See more Mike W @MikeW269 Sep 20 The movie is excellent, though not fun or uplifting. One very cool thing is that I am 95% sure I was at the souvenir shop where the movie was done back as a kid traveling in NM with family around 1956-57, outside Albuquerque. See more Mark B 12/04/2024 Kirk Douglas puts in an electrifying performance as a former down on his luck, hard-nosed, top hack, now resorting to working for a hick-town newspaper in the middle of nowhere in America to make ends meet. But Douglas suddenly hits gold in his bid to get back to the big time in New York when he stops off to get gas on the way to his original assignment and stumbles across an incident involving a man trapped down a sacred Indian tomb. With savage determination to exploit the story solely for his own gain, Douglas milks the story dry to his old newspaper boss paying him top dollar, knowing the trapped man will probably die as a result. Douglas fills the screen in this mesmerizing tale of naked, human ambition, trampling on anyone and everything that gets in his way. See more Allen R @AL_SeesALotOfMovies 05/06/2024 Disturbing look at what humanity will turn to if they get a little attention. Kirk Douglas is fantastic as a reporter doing anything to make it the top even if it means making up the story. See more Steve D 04/03/2024 I found it melodramatic and unconvincing, See more Sean S 11/16/2023 Billy Wilder, one of America's top five directors teaming up with Kirk Douglas at his peak. A cynical but truthful look at the tabloid news media industry. One of the very few 5/5 films. See more Read all reviews
