But soon he proves to be cruelest than his father, and the resistance under the leadership of Thorne (Donald Sutherland) fights for the rights of the citizen. When Thorne is arrested, the former idealistic bureaucratic clerk and presently prison guard Joe (Ralph Fiennes) sees his conditions in prison and befriends him. Years later, Joe becomes the captain responsible for the security of Maximilian II, but he betrays the dictator and allows a security breach. Thorne kills Maximiliam II and the First Lady, assuming the government. But soon Joe, who is considered a hero by the revolution, sees that Thorne is worse than Maximiliam II and refuses to sign a document of loyalty to the tyrant, losing everything that he praises. “Land of the Blind” (2006) is a depressing tale of corruption and power in politics by Robert Edwards. Ralph Fiennes performs an idealistic man that wants the best for his country, but learns that politicians are the same garbage, promising better life for the electors but they want to keep the power indeed. Robert Edwards is not subtle but exposes the wounds of many real countries like Brazil, for example, where the country is divided but the leaders are the same trash, supported by corrupt politicians. The ironic thing is that the manipulated masses follow blindly their leaders like a cattle. My vote is seven. It's only necessary to comprehend what this movie is about to gain genuine insight into why nations run by the oppressive tyranny of brutish, authoritarian governments are and remain in the far lower class slums of ignorance, horror, despair and, practically, living death. The age-old story of freedom-fighter acting to usurp a dictator, with hopes of a new enlightened path. Installing the new regime, the leader who held such promise (Donald Sutherland) becomes the brute he was meant to replace (Tom Hollander). The usefulness of the idealist activist (Ralf Feinnes) fades away when he begins again to question the newly installed authoritarian leader.
