Meri S @mschroeder Jul 7 This movie just didn’t do it for me. IMO Edward Norton is just not a strong actor, nor a leading man. I just don’t pick up on any charisma. Maybe he’s just played unlikeable characters in the movies I’ve seen. The incessant instrumental music throughout the movie was annoying. The plot was weak. It leaves a lasting impact because of how grounded and human it feels, focusing on real consequences, regret, and reflection in a way that sticks with you after it ends. The film’s atmosphere is incredibly strong. It captures a very specific mood of uncertainty and tension, but also quiet emotional weight. The characters feel complex and believable, and the storytelling takes its time in a way that feels intentional rather than slow. What makes it stand out is how personal it feels. It doesn’t rely on flashy twists or spectacle, but instead builds its strength through character, dialogue, and tone. That restraint is what makes it memorable for me. I slept on it and decided the movie was a complete waste of my time. I like Spike Lee for making Do The Right Thing. I say that knowing he and I have opposite worldviews while acknowledging he made a movie that will endure. Alternatively, 25th Hour is slow, built on a very simple and pointless premise that is not developed to accomplish anything memorable, interesting, classic or realistic. There is one rant in the mirror that was well done but it completely lacks context other than Ed Norton's character admitting all of his mistakes are his own doing and not everyone elses fault. OK. But the movie stunk. Two scenes with the DEA lead...his acting was terrific. PSHoffman...yeah, great actor but any new comer would have worked. The role was like the movie: boring and dull. Pepper was the only character who was at least consistent and real albeit an absolute empty loser. Just a way, way, way over rated movie.
