Living a life marked by violence and racism, neo-Nazi Derek Vinyard finally goes to prison after killing two black youths who tried to steal his car. Upon his release, Derek vows to change his ways; he hopes to prevent his younger brother, Danny, who idolizes Derek, from following in his footsteps. The first half of the film works best because it uses rigorous violence and hate-speech to build and showcase the neo-Nazi group’s philosophy. The protagonist’s transformation in the second half is not as profound.

Alongside 'Children of Men' this movie 'American History X' seems to explain what is happening in America today. AHX has powerful imagery and strong emotions but at times doesn't ring entirely true but that may be a narrative device to bring us closer to a predetermined conclusion. For the sake of artistry and storytelling, realism is sacrificed, but there may be a lesson in the story that is being told which some may feel overrides other considerations. The ending, however, reeks of realism but the movie goes out on a point of idealism and this contradiction might explain why America is where it is today on the issue of race relations.
