He may be blind, but Nick Parker (Rutger Hauer) has a way with a sword. The Vietnam vet pays a visit to an old war buddy, Frank Devereaux (Terrance O'Quinn), only to discover that his friend is in deep trouble. Gangsters have killed Frank's wife (Meg Foster) and are holding him hostage in Reno, Nev. Making a narrow escape with Frank's young son (Brandon Call), Nick heads across the country to even the score. Needless to say, his opponents underestimate him -- and his sword skills.

A double-dimed Zatoichi remake that’s also a late-’80s remnant of gruesome / goofy aesthetics, "Blind Fury" is easily the friendliest film in which someone has their hand severed at the wrist. It's an analog delight that's more than an afterthought.

Blind Fury (1989) The Blind Swordman (11,892 – 27 Aug 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) “Blind Fury” (1989) is one of those wonderful movies from the 80’s that has not aged and is still engaging. Rutger Hauer performs as a skilled blind swordsman that gets into trouble to rescue his buddy from a criminal gang and deliver his son safe and sound to him. The story has humor and action in right doses and is a good work by Phillip Noyce. My family and I have just rewatched this film and everybody was happy in the end. My vote is seven. Loved it! Rutger Hauer shines in character here. Very well directed by Phillip Noyce. Great cinematography and visual effects. Memorable with lots of action, good storyline and enough twists. Very entertaining

Underrated gem from the 90's. While it lacks surreal grittiness of blade runner, and the CGI is no wear as good as good the matrix (few years later), it has it's own charm. If you consider many action movies of the era (die hard) and how new some ideas were (internet and neo noir) it delivers a unique perspective. Keanu Reeves also does well considering a few years before he was doing Bill and Ted; ranting about wanting room service and you can see him unnaturally contort his hands when suffering from first mental breakdown.
