Peter B @RT46660475 2d The tension and anxiety you experience with the main character starts the moment the film starts. Elsie FIsher proves how good her acting chops are immediately. This was one of those films that the journey is heart wrenching and the end is so uplifting. One of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had watching a film in a long time. Kudos to all, but especially to Ms. Fisher. See more Griffith J @griffithxjohnson May 15 The type of movie that makes you hug your daughter, tell them they are perfect, & do everything in your power to help & protect them through the tough journey of growing up. There is a monologue in the third act that completely encapsulates everything I can & cannot express about being a parent & it’s impossible not to cry during it. Navigating adolescence only seems to be getting harder & scarier as society evolves with the screenplay perfectly showing that in an unabashed reality. Funny, hopeful, awkward, & stressful with a young performance from Fisher that brings each emotion to life. Simply shot but always capturing its coming-of-age tone with a unique score to seal everything up. Keep your finger on the volume control and be prepared to go from quite dialog to jarring music. You cannot lose yourself in this movie because of this unfortunate flaw. Even though my middle school experience was different in ways (iPhones and social media were not a part of it), the vulnerability and angst are true to form. Redeeming qualities include the good acting, semi-realistic dialogue, and one or two mildly amusing moments. I guess it might be relatable to some people, but relatability isn't what people watch movies for. When the protagonist ends up in virtually the exact same place they started, just a little older, it makes you wonder what the point was. I've loved Bo Burnham since he was 16 because we're practically the same age, but this was genuinely so disappointingly bad. I'd hate to say, "stay in your lane", because the directing wasn't awful, but the actual storyline was a completely missing. I'm happy some people feel like it scratched an emotional itch for them, but it was the driest nothing burger ever, for me. See more Read all reviews
