Hunted by mysterious forces, a young woman who has supernatural abilities must go on the run when her powers are discovered. The screenplay feels thin and poorly balanced. While the family’s history is explained in sufficient detail, the depiction of the antagonist is extremely vague. It seems to gesture toward some form of state power, but too much is left to the viewer’s imagination. Visually, the film is mostly confined to flat landscapes and domestic spaces. There is a mild lift in the second half, but overall it remains dull. The four actors portraying the family each have strong presence and are genuinely compelling, which only highlights how little weight or clarity the "enemy" is given. Poetic films with less information can work, but poetic imagery requires a careful balance—one where sparse details still feel enough to explain the whole. Here, that balance is missing.

Treads then simplistically amazes for its visuals emotionally accompanied by unexpected resonance exceptionally performed, particularly Mbatha-Raw’s being distressfully heartening, across Julia Hart’s rurally grounded storytelling in the genre. (B+)
