Though Emily and Donald live in the same London neighborhood of Hampstead, the worlds they inhabit could not be more different. Emily is an American widow occupying a posh apartment she can no longer afford, and Donald is an Irish loner who lives off the land in a makeshift cabin and wants nothing more than to be left in peace. When his home is threatened by real estate developers, Emily believes she has found her new cause -- but gets more than she bargained for when romance blossoms.

The quasi-credible friendship that develops between Emily and Harry gives way to a less plausible romance. But the winning, sympathetic Keaton and an enjoyably puckish Gleeson largely sell the contrived setup.

Diane Keaton still looks like Annie Hall, a little older and a little wiser. Pairing her with the grizzled but appealing Brendan Gleeson is a plus.

I very much enjoyed this movie Hampstead, the cast, the topics, and that it was made. In a land where so many movies are a dime a dozen, yet serve no purpose in the long term compared to where the investment of efforts could have been spent elsewhere, this movie like so many Diane Keaton chose, honored real and fragile, usually unseen, unfeatured characters in movies, I'm glad I saw it, I'm glad it was made.

Deary me, the only likeable character was Donald! Diane Keatons' character Emily was genuinely pathetic, dithering around and never expressing any loyalty until the court case. What a meddler too, expecting the man to leave his home that he's been fighting for and telling him to 'woo' her...I was glad when he asked her to leave. Her son was also self absorbed and childish for his age. I'm all for a feel good formulaic movie now and again, but it's got to have characters with some substance, this was so poorly scripted. Shame.
