Disgraced ex-policeman Nick Starkey (Kevin Kline) is brought back to the force by his brother Frank (Harvey Keitel) to help find a serial killer loose in New York City. Unconventional and misunderstood, Nick figures out the killer's patterns while wooing both his own sister-in-law, Christine (Susan Sarandon), and the mayor's daughter Bernadette (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). The police arrest a suspect, but Nick thinks they have the wrong man, so he attempts to find the murderer on his own.

It wants to be zany but violent, satirical but slapstick, romantic but cynical. It wants some of its actors to rant and rave like amateur tragedians, and others to reach for subtle nuances. And it wants all of these things to happen at the same time.

I streamed The January Man on Tubi and it's not terrible. The movie feels rushed and try to make you believe this super cop that once was now a firefighter with no real backstory. Nick is summoned by the Mayor after a serial killer is on the loose. They try to make Nick out to be this modern day Sherlock Holmes type. He isn't, but the film just doesn't work. It's all over the place and none of it feels earned. Nick's brother who is married to nicks ex or ex wife is just weird. It feels unnecessary and just another reason imyo make an already bad movie worse. There's a decent movie in it somewhere it just isn't fleshed out. This could be remade and made way better with a few critiques.

Zany, cheesy and off-beat. The stellar cast makes for good viewing. Good writing and cinematography. Story is a glorious mashed up mess, with panache, if possible? 😜 Enough action, suspense, drama, quirkiness, intrigue, mystery and tomfoolery to keep you occupied and entertained.

Worth a look for a hilarious, post-Die Hard turn from the late great Alan Rickman as an unemployed, eccentric painter of nude women, as well as Rod Steiger in the most over the top performance of his career. It's not very suspenseful. Nor is it all that funny. But it's smart, different and has an interesting murder mystery at its core. A lackluster ending and Harvey Keitel is awful.
