6.5/10 It's a very flawed follow up that is a sappier version of TLW and makes some pretty bold swings (made even more polarizing by some logic leaps that the story and characters try to justify). With that said, this one feels weirdly over hated when really most of the more problematic stuff only happens in the final stretch of the movie. The film is well directed and the returning characters were given a much stronger direction and follow up than the previous movie.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is good when it embraces its two big ideas, even if they do not fit together smoothly. The volcanic island escape gives the first half a strong disaster-movie hook, with urgency, spectacle, and striking images as Isla Nublar and the original dream of Jurassic Park are destroyed. The second half shifts into a darker haunted-house movie inside the Lockwood mansion, with the Indoraptor stalking through bedrooms, hallways, and shadows. J.A. Bayona gives the film some strong images, including the volcano, dinosaur silhouettes, mansion shadows, and the brachiosaurus on the dock. The moral question of saving the dinosaurs gives the story more thematic potential than a simple escape plot. The problem is that the movie feels like two different films stitched together, and Maisie’s backstory is underdeveloped. Fallen Kingdom is uneven, but its visual style and darker ideas make it interesting.
