When Orsolya oversees the eviction of a local elderly man in Cluj, Transylvania, the unintended consequences come to shatter her and her understanding of her place in society. Spiraling into an existential crisis, she traverses the city, meeting with various people in her life -- her husband, an old friend, her former student, a priest -- to consider and reconcile her place in an increasingly maddening modern world in award-winning filmmaker Radu Jude's latest furious and hysterical moral parable.

This features a fantastic performance from Eszter Tompa, who is so understated, humanistic, grounded, and real that you don't feel like you're watching someone who's acting. Go to Full Review

There is almost no forward momentum after this point, but the film becomes a searing, often hilarious look at Orsolya’s guilt and the various people from whom she seeks absolution. Go to Full Review

Jude is hardly precious about his craft. But that’s because he’s confident you’ll leave bursting with thoughts and feelings about the price of progress, the weight of history and the ways we struggle to do right amid so much that’s wrong. Go to Full Review

To best appreciate Jude’s film, it is best to be in a theater and forced to focus to appreciate his style and message because it is easy to be lulled into the story’s rhythm then miss the momentous message. Go to Full Review

Radu Jude’s cynicism about the world is obvious in this treatise on how those in need, in any society, are either underserved by those who should serve them or ignored completely Go to Full Review
Oscar Goff Boston Hassle 3d
The result is less thrillingly audacious, perhaps, than Jude’s common fare, but it’s also more digestible. If one were to introduce a neophyte to Jude’s brand of scabrous satire, this might be a good jumping-on point. Go to Full Review

Akira B @akirabergman 2d Good movie but could have been better if geopolitics weren't handled so crudely. See more Umutoni G @RT01569678 5d It mixes dark humor with some pretty heavy real-life issues like poverty, housing, and responsibility, so it can feel funny in moments but also very uncomfortable and reflective at the same time. See more danelectro T @danelectro Apr 14 Not a masterpiece but still a very well made film with solid actors and lovely scenes of Romania. This is a Buddhistic film in a way: one character spouts Buddhistic koans, and the main character briefly mentions the Wim Wenders film Perfect Days, often seen as Buddhistic in its portrayal of a simple life designed to reduce suffering and to maximize acceptance of one's responsibilities toward others. In this film, a person follows a bureaucratic decision that contributes to someone's mortal harm, and then a great deal of personal suffering. Everyone she encounters is advising her to not take responsibility. The film is clearly outlining the Buddhistic guidelines on choosing right action, right speech, right intention, right livelihood, and illustrating how without that awareness suffering may ensue. A film about choices, even mundane professional ones, that may cause harm. E.g., which of the buyers of today's super-sized cars think of how they are reversing the work of millions? See more Joseph W @Joebox5116 Apr 13 Totally devoid of satire, plot and audience engagement. Why was this movie made? See more R Victor B @opinionatedinnyc Apr 5 Pretentious and sophomoric. So even if the director/writer stands on the right side of history, that doesn't make for a good film See more Runa R @runa.r Jan 15 I would give this film 3.8 stars, but since that option does not exist, I give it 4. It is an enjoyable watch and raises the questions we are all familiar with in Europe regarding the encroachment of real estate companies to build hotels. The film shows beautiful inhabited areas that coexist, side by side, with signs of decay and poverty. Both the buildings and the people are the same. See more Read all reviews
