In 2005 Afghanistan, Navy SEALs Marcus Luttrell (Mark Wahlberg), Michael Murphy (Taylor Kitsch), Danny Dietz (Emile Hirsch) and Matthew "Axe" Axelson (Ben Foster) deploy on a mission of surveillance and to take out Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. Though spotted by goatherds, Luttrell and his team decide not to kill them. But one of the Afghans alerts a group of Taliban fighters to the invaders, and a terrible battle ensues, in which the SEALs find themselves hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned.

For all its flaws it is both a gripping action thriller and an unforgettable depiction of the cold realities of war. My first reaction after seeing it was a simple one: this must be how it was. It may be the highest tribute I can pay.

Lone Survivor’s major saving grace is that it never resorts to actual flag-waving, but enough pro-military overtones subsist in the material to consider it an effective recruiting video.

I don't understand the point of this movie? Theres is always a narc in a group. Not to be mean but i would of kept them prisoners or definitely left them tied up accordingly. Im sure one of them would of eventually let themselves out.

This is total bullshit portraying our military in this light. Hollywood has portrayed our soldiers as complete idiots. I can't believe this even made it to the theater. F you Hollywood. The best part of the movie was the end.

Most of the wannabe movie critics blogging about the director taking cinematic liberties and the "fetish level" of body wounds should have read the book, which happens to be non fiction. This movie is tame in comparison. The level at which these top tier warriors operate borders on unimaginable to most people. Their intelligence, brotherhood, self sacrifice and just plain guts against an overwhelming force gives me chills every time and speaks volumes about the infinitesimal percentage of those who qualify as Seal team operators. As a sidebar the movie dispenses with the somewhat overdone portion of the book involving Seal training and gets right to the meat of the mission.
