A dark-haired woman (Laura Elena Harring) is left amnesiac after a car crash. She wanders the streets of Los Angeles in a daze before taking refuge in an apartment. There she is discovered by Betty (Naomi Watts), a wholesome Midwestern blonde who has come to the City of Angels seeking fame as an actress. Together, the two attempt to solve the mystery of Rita's true identity. The story is set in a dream-like Los Angeles, spoilt neither by traffic jams nor smog.

Self-indulgent and pretentious. Weird for the sake of weirdness. Some great acting from Naomi Watts and a fantastic full version of Crying in Spanish from Rebekah Del Rio.

I got it. The repressed guilt, the illusion, all of it — it's not that deep. My problem is that Lynch tries so hard to be "not like the others" that he forgets to do a good job. Unnecessary characters, scenes designed purely to signal weirdness, and female sexuality written entirely by and for the male gaze. Men do mediocre work and collect praise.
