In its refusal to judge Donna even as she struggles to earn our respect, OBVIOUS CHILD may just be the most radical film of 2014. Yes, there's a romance, but it's not the driving point of the movie. Yes, there's some humor, but this is not a comedy. After comedian Donna Stern (Jenny Slate) is dumped by her boyfriend, she engages in an alcohol-fueled one-night stand with Max (Jake Lacy), a buttoned-down game developer she meets in a bar. When she discovers that she is pregnant, she knows that her only option is an abortion. Your view on abortion will greatly impact on how you react to Obvious Child, make no mistake. Despite the divisive nature of the film, it feels genuine. The performances feel natural, the relationships feel real, and Donna's reaction to her problem is genuine. However, the viewer's reaction to the movie will greatly depend on which side of the abortion issue he or she is on. See more Read all reviews
