A surprisingly solid prequel to an inexcusably lazy and generic horror flick. Mike Flanagan is of course huge in this space, and he just did a good job of finding an interesting, satisfying prequel story to tell that makes the events of the original make more sense, even if still fails to ultimately justify how bland its predecessor was.

It has its chilling moments, but it was so predictable and heavily dependent on other movies' ideas (The Conjuring, The Exorcist, and even Insidious) that it came to be just mediocre. And it had really stupid elements to balance the involving ones. The visuals and photography were great, though
