Critics Consensus

A stylish ride weighed down by the litany of clichés it picks up along the way, Passenger drives in circles but has some memorable bumps and jolts during the journey.

Norwegian director André Øvredal does not reinvent the wheel with this humble genre entry, but the film’s slick formal language, game central performances and intelligent thematic explorations make it a satisfying thrill-ride. Go to Full Review

Like a bright headlight facing you dead on or the sudden honk of a loud horn, only the jump scares keep you from falling asleep during the seemingly interminable Passenger. Go to Full Review

It is a fairly solid bit of genre craftwork that is a lot more impressive than its desultory release might suggest. Go to Full Review

As road-trip horror goes, this one has plenty of memorable stops along the way. Passenger could have used a little less scenic routing and a lot more hell in the rearview mirror. Go to Full Review

So, almost everything expected of a horror film, from blood to gore to jump scares, happens in the film. Almost everything that you know will come to pass does. Go to Full Review

With a few tweaks, this could have sown the seeds for a franchise. But it falls flat and as it stands it is an OK popcorn movie that definitely won’t go down as a horror classic. Go to Full Review

EliseW 55m Film had decent atmosphere, few good jump scares, and some interesting concepts in there. There are some kernels of what a van life horror film could look like, and some potential commentary to be mined about people who chose that lifestyle vs. those who live in mobile homes/nomadically due to inequalities of our current system (and the contrast/tension between those two). However, Passenger is also a horror film that requires the leads to make very stupid choices and lack any self-awareness for the plot to happen. What woman walks through a gym parking lot at night with both headphones in at full blast. What person of color lives in their vehicle and travels across the U.S. without any vigilance regarding law enforcement or entering white-dominated spaces where it looks Deliverance country. Both actors due to their best but they have that alien, implacable accent of a non-American doing an "American" accent. For Andr vredal, I'd recommend The Autopsy of Jane Doe or Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark over Passenger. See more Ana Elizabeth 4h LOVED IT! Great momentum start to finish. I was focused start to finish. The thought of reality within the film was present. 8/10 See more Kim 6h I liked it!
