See more Brent H @BrentMHinson Oct 29 Since its release in the mid-80s, I've watched Real Genius more times than I can count. With Kilmer's passing, I had to rewatch the film to remember just how great he is in this movie. The film shifts back and forth between a quick-witted comedy and a somewhat serious political drama. Honestly, without Val Kilmer's charm as Chris Knight, it would not work as well as it does. It would still be an enjoyable movie, but Kilmer, in his second feature role, brings an intangible element that allows the film to maintain a healthy balance between serious and humorous moments. The plot revolves around engineering students unknowingly creating a military weapon. While that doesn't necessarily sound like something that would contain laugh-out-loud moments, the cast and the script find a way to make something that sounds quite serious on paper an intelligent yet comedic film. Some of the more serious political elements may be a bit much for some people, but don't let that deter you from seeing the charismatic wit of Val Kilmer at the beginning of his career. Oh, and the use of Tears For Fear's "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" as the movie transitions into the credits is a masterful choice.
