Chris S @Janomi Jul 3 RocknRolla is Guy Ritchie doing what he does best. He returns to the fast-paced British crime formula that made him famous, filling the film with stylish editing, sharp dialogue, energetic camerawork, and intersecting storylines that make even the exposition entertaining. The mix of crime, comedy, and action gives the movie a confident energy from beginning to end. Gerard Butler leads an outstanding ensemble, but Mark Strong, Toby Kebbell, and Tom Hardy are the real standouts. Every criminal has a distinct personality, and Ritchie's witty dialogue and colorful nicknames make even the supporting characters memorable. The biggest drawback is that the web of double-crosses and overlapping storylines occasionally becomes more complicated than necessary. A few twists feel designed to impress rather than clarify. Even so, the sharp performances, stylish direction, and entertaining cast of characters make RocknRolla one of Ritchie's most enjoyable crime films. See more Dave K @BilboBagsy Jul 1 Toby Kebbel steals the show as the film's heroin addicted famous rockstar. The more you see of this man the better he gets. You notice he has a surprising amount of range, it's a drastic but awesome change from the last film I watched him in, which was Dead Man's Shoes. Some of his scenes and dialogue are mesmerising. He’s got those sort of interesting lines that you expect to see written in a Quentin Tarantino film. He regularly gives unhinged speeches that are seemingly wise, but at the same time nothing but nonsense. It reminded me of John Travolta going on about the name of a cheeseburger for 5 minutes in Pulp Fiction. It doesn't move the story forward or reveal anything new about the plot or characters. This is usually something to not do in a script but for some reason listening to the drug addled ramblings of Toby Kebbel I found to be the highlight of the film and he stole the show. It was like Guy Ritchie ran out of money or time or both. Nearly every plot angle wasn’t resolved and the viewer is just left with "what happened?" If you want to see 3/4 of a fun movie, go for it.
