Mixing sensuality and lyrical atmospherics with an unapologetically highbrow frame of reference (German Romantic drama, modernist architecture), this elegantly confident offering should attract strong art-house interest, not least among LGBTQ+ outlets. Go to Full Review

As an example of what's to come in Spanish auteur cinema, 'Strange River' is exciting, unique, and paves the way for a hopeful future for an industry that refuses to give up. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

A tender, atmospheric coming-of-age film that embraces ambiguity over answers, Strange River turns adolescent desire and family tension into a hypnotic, beautifully textured journey of feeling rather than explanation. Go to Full Review

Christian M @chriss17eu Feb 24 'Strange River' confuses silence with depth and duration with transcendence. It’s short, yet it feels like it only truly begins halfway through; its first part dissolves into images that build nothing, create no tension, and suggest nothing beyond themselves. The film obsessively lingers on water and the current, with shots so long they convey neither emotion nor meaning. The performances disappoint: Jan Monter forces a mystery that never convinces, and Alexander’s appearances feel artificial and decorative. The narrative wanders with absurd threads and unrelated elements, like the German architecture. Silence dominates without inviting reflection, and conflicts barely develop. Everything remains on the surface. It demands effort without reward, leaves no lasting images, and ultimately feels like a complete waste of time. See more Read all reviews
