While World War II rages, Patty Bergen (Kristy McNichol) lives in rural Georgia with her family. One day, the young Jewish girl makes a surprising discovery: There's a German POW named Anton (Bruce Davison) living in her family's barn. While working at a nearby farm, opportunity struck and he made a run for it. Rather than turning Anton in, Patty aids the escaped soldier, and over time the pair fall in love. They must live, however, in constant fear of being discovered.

Mike P @RT09890132 2d Powerful and dark, Emmy winning tv movie from the 70s; it's both nostalgic romance, and a tragic war story, about a local girl outcast who gives housing and hospice to an escaped Nazi, during the war, and then dearly pays the price...It's a little maudlin; and melodramatic, but contains some excellent acting, and some fierce set pieces; and it's part of the classic "Tortured Coming of Age" film tradition that contains The Color Purple and Welcome to the Dollhouse...It also summons up The Diary Of Anne Frank for the viewer...Overall it's well done and well worth rediscovering this forgotten gem; if only for the brave and evocative performances of Kristy Machnichol, Bruce Davidson and Esther Rolle who won an Emmy for her impressive work here. I recommend this. See more Kirsten W. @kirght Nov 7 Lovely story. I saw this when I was a teenager and loved it. The acting is very good. Bruce Davison is awesome in this role...this is the youngest I've ever seen him, and he nailed this part of an escaped German POW. Awesome movie. Just simply AWESOME!! See it if you haven't.
