In a not-so-distant dystopian future where the government sends seniors to isolated colonies under the guise of boosting the economy, 77-year-old Tereza (Denise Weinberg) decides her story is far from over. Refusing to surrender her independence, she embarks on a journey to pursue the dreams she is not yet ready to abandon. Along the way, she discovers freedom, companionship, and the joys of going wherever the river takes her. Winner of the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, the latest from director Gabriel Mascaro (Neon Bull, Divine Love) is an inspiring reminder that it's never too late to take flight.

The gentle sci-fi drama presents a vivid and detailed world whose murkiest elements are often left to innuendos and the imagination (but feel no less threatening). The result is a uniquely life-affirming coming of (old) age saga. Go to Full Review

This Logan’s Run-meets-The African Queen Brazilian dystopian sci-fi drama finds an elderly woman escaping government-enforced "retirement" by hiring a shady captain to ferry her upriver. Lovely to look at but this trail runs a little cold. Go to Full Review

I like that the world presented in the movie is left mostly ambiguous. Is there something sinister happening in those colonies? Maybe. Our protagonist surely thinks her freedom is worth more and goes to extreme lengths to avoid this fate. It’s always a joy when these films manage to break through the barriers of distribution. I made a point of staying until the very end of the credits to read the message that no animals were harmed during the filming. See more Read all reviews
