Starring record-shattering comedian Nate Bargatze in his first feature film, The Breadwinner stars Bargatze as salesman Nate Wilcox and Mandy Moore as his wife, Katie. To Nate and their three children, Katie is the ultimate mom -- she manages their comically chaotic household with equal parts efficiency and love, and everything runs perfectly. But when Katie's household invention leads to a once-in-a-lifetime deal on Shark Tank and takes her on a prolonged business trip, Nate has to figure out how to keep the house from (literally) falling apart. He and his kids soon learn that while he may not do it like mom, he can figure out how to do it his way. Welcome to the dad era.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

As unlikely to ruffle any feathers as it is to drum up many laughs, The Breadwinner's half-baked jokes turn Nate Bargatze's avatar of the befuddled patriarch into one stale oaf.

Peter Travers The Travers Take 2d

Standup’s comedy king of clean Nate Bargatze riffs on Mr. Mom for his screen acting debut. He deserves better than this phoned-in excuse for family fun. So do audiences. Go to Full Review
David Fear Rolling Stone 3d
You start to feel like you’re a consumer being sold a bill of goods, and this is just one more product meant for you to buy, consume, and forget. The first two options are up to you. The last one couldn’t be more easy. Go to Full Review
Glenn Kenny New York Times 3d
Bargatze proves himself a savvy writer and performer here; he doesn’t hog all the laugh lines for himself, but instead often plays straight man to his three daughters... It’s the girls who ultimately make this comedy sing. Go to Full Review

While taking no risks is smart from a marketing perspective, it’s creatively bereft. Those of us unfamiliar with Bargatze going in will be shocked at just how predictable and thunderously dull it turned out to be. Go to Full Review

A pathetic ripoff of 1983's Mr. Mom, the stale and unfunny comedy The Breadwinner has a workaholic protagonist dad who is not only inept at basic domestic duties but he's also an irresponsible and annoying parent. The slapstick jokes are awful. Go to Full Review

A movie with a below-average hit to miss ratio with the jokes that proves that the star’s talents don’t translate to cinema just yet. Go to Full Review
