In 1977, paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren come out of a self-imposed sabbatical to travel to Enfield, a borough in north London. There, they meet Peggy Hodgson, an overwhelmed single mother of four who tells the couple that something evil is in her home. Ed and Lorraine believe her story when the youngest daughter starts to show signs of demonic possession. As the Warrens try to help the besieged girl, they become the next targets of the malicious spirit.

Wan is still effective in creating memorable and horrific imagery that lingers in the mind, as well as moments of levity in-between that are surprisingly genuine and sweet.

It is a basic thing done very well, in many ways a pristine example of what Wan always shows up to do. He's going to keep you anxious -- nothing can feel totally stable when a camera never ceases to move.

Too long by far, James Wan's sequel nevertheless has great set-piece and a hornier version of Ed and Lorraine. As an Enfield Poltergeist/Haunting adaptation, the entire last act is fiction, but Farmiga and Wilson are as watchable as ever
