Frenkie T @RT32638069 Nov 5 A stylish arthouse black-and-white horror film, with a folksy edge as it depicts a cross-section of the lives of a Portuguese family of immigrants. It's quite naturalistic and, at times, genuinely creepy. For a debut film at 26, not only in directing but also in writing, it's a strong work. Unfortunately, Nicolas Pesch hasn't yet managed to carve out a solid career as a horror filmmaker, but he still has time; he's only 35, and he's getting the money to make films. "The Eyes of My Mother" is a bit raw in places, both in terms of emotion, realism, and meaning, including the "eyes." But it's definitely worth watching. I see a strong Martyr's (2008) in it. It's quite gore and terrifying. The movie has its fair share of good character, especially the main character. It's impressive how she was wrote to be evil and, at the same time, you can feel her struggle. It makes the movie more nuanced and deep. If you like your horror quick and chockfull of scares, then this isn’t the movie for you. It has shots that go on for a long time, large gaps in conversation and not much dialogue. It’s one you need to have patience with and absorb everything that’s going on. The lead isn’t an interesting character on her own, but it’s the events she goes through and her increasingly erratic actions that make the story so interesting. I don’t think it was necessary to open the film with a scene from later on, but it does at least look distinctive and create a sense of mystery, one which hangs over the entire story. It’s proof that we don’t need to like our lead to find them compelling and engaging, and while it might strain your patience at times I still think that, at only 76 minutes, it’s more than worth the watch.
