In Disney's beguiling animated romp, rebellious 16-year-old mermaid Ariel (Jodi Benson) is fascinated with life on land. On one of her visits to the surface, which are forbidden by her controlling father, King Triton, she falls for a human prince. Determined to be with her new love, Ariel makes a dangerous deal with the sea witch Ursula (Pat Carroll) to become human for three days. The Little Mermaid is the best Disney animated movie ever (along with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King for instance). It's one of my top five favorite movies of 1989 (along with Tim Burton's Batman, James Cameron's The Abyss, Driving Miss Daisy, and Born on the Fourth of July for instance). Many moviegoers and kids will love the 1989 Disney animated classic version of that film. They've got awesome famous songs like Under the Sea, Kiss the Girl, and Part of Your World. I love that movie a lot. It's right before the first CGI animated movie Toy Story (in which it came out in 1995).

Back then an equational return for Disney’s animated transcendence that formally rejuvenated the art form for what it is: Beautifully drawn, whimsically sung and wonderfully performed, with a rightfully tuned story that deviated from its darker source material to remarkable results that thematically refines, though minimally questions, and solidifies the entertaining, feel-good heart. (A-)
