Sight gags, wordplay, slapstick, background jokes, misunderstandings, and absurd throwaway lines are packed into almost every scene. Even when one gag misses, another usually lands a few seconds later. Leslie Nielsen is the best thing about the movie. Frank Drebin is completely clueless, but Nielsen plays him with total seriousness, never winking at the audience or acting like he knows he is in a ridiculous movie. That deadpan commitment is what makes the nonsense so funny. The baseball finale is one of the movie’s biggest highlights, with Frank undercover as the umpire, Reggie Jackson, the Queen, and escalating stupidity all coming together beautifully. Not every joke is brilliant, but the batting average is high enough to make The Naked Gun a very funny police-procedural spoof.
