Please watch this in German with subtitles instead of overdubbed English. I found Der Tiger to be a fascinating Mischung of history, and gradually increasing horror in reconciling Nazi deeds from a very immediate distance. Showing the humanity of Lt Gerkens and crew via pictures of wives, girlfriends and children subconsciously illustrates the true horror of turning a winemaker, Latin teacher, a teen and a professional soldier into SS killers who shoot something similar to napalm into a factory full of men and women in Stalingrad because…orders are orders. There’s a strong influence of Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now in their quest…without overtly copying. The ambiguous ending was utterly fantastic IMHO. Strong visuals, immediate allegory to death, decay and hell itself while whispering "what’s really going on here" makes this worth watching. And the first half – and some of the second half – is pretty great: kind of 'Heart of Darkness' in a tank. There are scenes that will live with the viewer for a long time, and that's no small thing. But the end – no specific spoilers here – belongs to an early version of the screenplay, that I was left wishing had been ditched in favor of something as visceral and ambitious as the opening scenes.
