Critics Consensus

Tense, smartly written, and wonderfully cast, The Town proves that Ben Affleck has rediscovered his muse -- and that he's a director to be reckoned with.

So this isn't fresh, exactly, but it is tense and exciting and well performed and you do end up caring about the people you've been manipulated into caring about. I ask you: what more could you want from a trip to the cinema? Go to Full Review

As far as a developing directing talent goes, The Town is to Ben Affleck what Pulp Fiction was to Quentin Tarantino. It's that good. Go to Full Review

A crackling drama with a fine sense of both spatial relationships (thank director Ben Affleck) and character relationships (thank scripter Ben Affleck). Go to Full Review

A surprisingly effective crime thriller that succeeds by leaning into the diversity of the ensemble cast of characters and their perspectives. Go to Full Review

It’s a well-executed mashup of set pieces and character dynamics that fail to build on what came before. Which, truth be told, still makes for a pretty entertaining viewing. Go to Full Review

Ben H @RT11794309 22h Lots of shots but not many targets found. Wraps up nicely See more Jayson O. @JKidd56 1d Electric performance from Renner and Affleck! I really love the Boston theme with the accents and the "pitiable Irish omerta"! Hamm and his forces attempt to stop the bank heists but Affleck is always two steps ahead. This was the first movie I've seen with Renner in and I consider it his career defining performance. This certainly elevated him to get the prestigious roles in the MCU, Mission Impossible, Knives Out etc. This has infinite rewatch value. There is no other film like it. The florist controlling the dope smuggling and helming the blueprints for the gangs crimes make it a thrilling ride into the hallowed underbelly of Boston. See more Adam J. @adamjue 2d Very good Boston and crime movie. One of favorite movies I’ve seen. See more Shawn H @Comrade_Arafat 2d The Town is an excellent movie. It properly portrays criminals and the complex relations of those involved. It gives credence to things like loyalty, but it also asks the question of whether or not its worth it as an obligation. It gives us a different side of criminality; that of the reticent and somewhat reluctant criminal. This is by far my favorite Ben Affleck performance. This is not only a solid street story, but a solid capturing on the cycle of crime, as well as the danger and destruction that comes along with it. See more Jay L. @Jay.Livin 3d Solid movie with some action and nail bitter moments but the storyline was more focused on Doug and Claire’s romance rather than giving us more thriller moments. It was more of a romance/crime/thriller movie rather than a crime/drama/thriller movie for me. I sort of lost interest halfway through the film. I wanted to see more thriller moments rather than romance scenes between Doug and Claire. I’m not opposed to romance films but I was expecting a bit more actions and thrilling moments in this movie especially because it’s a two hour film.
