This is like an SCTV cast movie (e.g. Best in Show--parents, camp scene) knitted to Safety Not Guaranteed (is it real?) plus some kind of office comedy and sort of a Willy Wonka Samuel L Jackson thing. It's all over the place and no place. The main character is a completely self-absorbed unlikeable arrested development scatterbrain. Yeah, I get it--she's yearning for her unicorn like it's Come Back Little Sheba and has to to mature enough to let go of it. This is basically a loosely-knit bunch of inferior vignettes (camp scene, vacuum scene, boyfriend restaurant scene, magic store scene) that really have no narrative cohesiveness. At the end we have a tacked on maturity arc not supported by the rest of the movie.

This movie is magical. I stumbled upon it while searching for Brie Larson movies and I’m so happy I did. I had zero expectations and I was so pleasantly surprised. It’s quirky and magical and beautiful and touches your soul and inner child. I love Brie Larson and I want her to direct more movies and the cast was so good! It’s cute as it is emotional! 5 stars Brie!

A solid story about self love and self discovery, and how the best way to connect with your inner child is actually by maturing and allowing others to love you. Touching and comedic, it's a show I'm happy to rewatch many times!

Optimistic to the point of being childish, this movie is about growing up on the inside. Sadly, it retains the appeal of a kindergarten art project. Sure, sparkles and glitter are fun, but Unicorn Store relies on too shallow a premise to be truly worthwhile.
