Critics Consensus

Given the subject matter, Valkyrie could have been an outstanding historical thriller, but settles for being a mildly entertaining, but disposable yarn.

Valkyrie, as field-commanded by director Bryan Singer, succeeds on its own terms as a handsome hybrid of conspiracy thriller and history lesson, of Mission: Impossible and The Day of the Jackal. Go to Full Review

JetSetKevvv 02/16/2022 Even though it had Tom Cruise in it it, (which I try to avoid Tom Cruise movies like the plague as (1). I don't think he's that great of an actor and (2). it's super hard for me to get past his offset, which actually centers his bucked out rabbit tooth/teeth to his mouth), it was still an awesome, historical movie! I took my dad to see it late one night after I got off from work & we both greatly enjoyed the movie! I have a bad habit of falling asleep in movies that don't have enough action or that can't keep my attention (which is hard to do with my ADHD but Valkyrie kept my full attention all throughout the entire length of the movie). I've since seen it again on several occasions now that it's been released to both DVD & available to watch on several different online streaming service providers. See more Walter R @WalterJ 2d I will never understand the basis for people reviewing films, it seems much of it is based upon whether you like or dislike a particular actor. In viewing this film like all, with an open mind, I found it extremely compelling and powerful, in the storytelling and acting, and this to me is particularly impressive when you already know the ending. I could see where some of the acting was not five star, in particular the actor who portrayed Hitler, although of course none of us really knew him. But I thought it was well cast and did not get carried away with any romanticism even with the colonel and his wife. I've seen numerous films on TCM including some so-called classics that we're rated much higher than this one, some real head scratchers. And I love classics. I just felt compelled to post this in a very modest effort to maybe affect some people's choices and watching it as I think it's worth their time. See more Gabriel S @Sanarel Jan 4 Valkyrie is a dramatization of the events of 20 July 1944 were a party of unsatisfied military tried to start a coup to kill Hitler. The movie portraits their acts as a heroic try at ending Hitler's ideology and try to remove the stain from WWII. This adaptation of the events pleases the audience by focusing on the good aspects of our main characters. In Brian Singer's view, Stauffenberg had solely pure intent to bring Germany back to its former glory rather than potential political or military motivations, which some sources seem to imply. Nonetheless, the plotline seems fateful enough. Tom Cruise plays Stauffenberg and the resemblance is acceptable. However, it does feel Americanized—this film would have been better with German cast. In this film, we have a polished Cruise back to its roots of just playing safe. If you like historical dramas, you will like Valkyrie for what it is — too brief and shallow, but you get your fair share of gossip-driven "this is how it sort of happened". See more Matthew L. @Moviefanatic02 Oct 28 Tom Cruise is a very strange individual, but I have to admit: his presence in Valkyrie adds a level of depth and intensity that I don’t think would’ve been there without him. The movie captures a fascinating perspective on one of the most daring plots in history, and it really makes you feel the weight and tension of what’s at stake. The raw emotion throughout, especially the nervous energy of those involved in the assassination attempt, feels incredibly real. While it’s not a perfect film, it’s gripping, well-acted, and filled with genuine suspense that keeps you on edge from start to finish. See more Daniel L Oct 19 Tragic story. Great movie See more thiago s @Thiagostone Oct 10 Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom See more Read all reviews
